Center for Democracy and Technology

Finding solutions and advocating for policies that keep the internet open, innovative, and free.

The Problem

New technology has unprecedented power to improve our lives — but at what cost to our freedom of expression and information? Or to our privacy? Data systems that digest and crunch consumer information collected through digital technology are increasingly making important decisions about individuals; the Internet of Things collects personal information about our lives; government censorship and content gatekeepers have the power to restrict the information we can access; governments have unprecedented ability to access, collect, and store individuals’ data personal information.

The Solution

The Center for Democracy and Technology champions global online civil liberties and human rights, advocating for policies that keep the internet open, innovative, and free. They bring together thought leaders to find innovative solutions to the policy challenges surrounding the Internet, working to define, promote, and influence technology policy. Their mission is to enhance freedom of expression, protect the fundamental right to privacy, limit government surveillance, and “define the boundaries of technology in our daily lives.”
