The Problem

Journalism has been in crisis for the better part of two decades. The industry has shrunk by half, as newspapers have folded or been swallowed up by corporations, and broadcast media ownership has become ever concentrated. Meanwhile, “new” media haven’t fared much better, having learned that online advertising doesn’t pay the bills. Of the media organizations left standing, fewer and fewer devote less and less time to important issues and more to corporate-sanctioned “infotainment.”

The Solution

Truthout is dedicated to providing a fiercely independent alternative to mainstream, corporate news organizations. The nonprofit organization refuses to accept advertising or corporate backing, relying instead on donations from individual readers for an average 81 percent of its annual budget. Truthout publishes independent news and commentary on a daily basis, including in-depth investigative reporting and critical analysis. It works to spark action by revealing systemic injustice and providing a platform for transformative ideas, seeking to spur “the revolution in consciousness and inspire the direct action that is necessary to save the planet and humanity.”
