Institute for Nonprofit News
The Problem
At a time of tectonic shifts in media technology, culture, economy, and politics, the need for journalism in the public interest is more urgent than ever. News organizations struggle to pay the bills amid industry contraction and the hollowing out of traditional business models. The nonprofit model is gaining currency in journalism, with exciting new organizations joining established nonprofit operations to fill the gap left by economic retrenchment.
The Solution
The Institute for Nonprofit News provides education and business support services to 150-plus nonprofit member organizations and promotes the value and benefit of public-service and investigative journalism. They do this by training members in operational and revenue-generating best practices; establishing strategic collaborations; promoting public service journalism as a philanthropic investment; and developing business leadership among nonprofit news organizations. The ultimate aim is to "increase the reach and impact" of [member organization's] work they seek to inform communities, hold the powerful accountable and help keep our democracy free."
