Student PIRGs: New Voters Project

Cutting through the clutter of voting so young people can make their voices heard.

The Problem

Millions of young Americans, when they turn 18 and become eligible to vote, bring to their democratic role a great sense of excitement and responsibility. They quickly discover that their path is strewn with obstacles — from getting registered, to figuring out where to cast a ballot, to understanding the issues and navigating a media landscape rife with misinformation and distortion. Many give up on the process, missing the opportunity to make their voices heard on the critical issues they care about — environmental protection, money in politics, affordable education, homelessness, student debt, social and economic justice, and more.

The Solution

The New Voters Project seeks to make participating in American democracy as seamless, straightforward as possible, so that young people can make their voices heard on election day on the issues that matter to them. The initiative is a project of the Student PIRGs, which for decades have been pioneers in youth voter registration and mobilization efforts. “Our generation is active, involved, and ready to participate in the decisions that impact our community. It’s time to turn the tide, and show decision-makers that they should look to us for answers.”
