Power of Love Foundation: Providing micro-loans for women affected by HIV/AIDS

description

Power of Love aims to create a world where the prevalence of the AIDS epidemic is continuously decreasing. In the meantime, Power of Love also seeks to break the cycle of poverty for Zambian women affected by HIV/AIDS, so that they can become both self-reliant and role-models for their community.

The Problem

A majority of Zambian women -- 80% -- live in extreme, abject poverty. They live on less than $2 a day. Meanwhile, HIV/AIDS is considered the deadliest epidemic of the 21st Century for the Zambian population. Approximately 17% of the national population is infected. Combined, these two national crises have orphaned thousands of Zambian children. They face malnutrition, neglect, and physical abuse. These children and their mothers need additional support.

The Solution

The Power of Love seeks to provide economic support to Zambian women affected by both poverty and HIV/AIDS. They do so by providing business training, micro-loans, and ongoing mentorship. By making these women economically self-sufficient, the Power of Love helps these women break out of the cycle of poverty. Many of these women then become role models for others in the community and help prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS.
