The Elizabeth Stone House: Helping families and individuals of domestic violence

description
The Elizabeth Stone House helps survivors of domestic violence in order to achieve safety, stability, and overall wellbeing.

The Problem

More than one-third of all women in the United States have been physically abused by a intimate partner at one point in their lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The most common types of violence include being slammed against a hard object or being hit with a fist or hard object. Often, the victim is financially dependent on the abuser, which adds to the reluctance of the abused to report the abuser. Furthermore, women who report physical abuse often face retaliation, intimidation, and stigmatization.

The Solution

The Elizabeth Stone House is a nonprofit organization based in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The organization provides a number of programs to help adults and children to recover from the physical trauma and begin anew. They provide shelter for the abused, and transitional services to help women and children get back on their feet. The transitional services program is 18 months long, and participants receive intensive case management, education, and help finding employment that will allow them to be financially self-reliant.
