Government of India: Plant 50 millions trees in a single day
The Problem
Earth's forests are disappearing on a massive scale, creating great environmental damage and destroying the quality of land. Forests still cover about 30 percent of the world’s land area, but swaths half the size of England are lost each year.
The Solution
India’s government reported that, last year, 800,000 volunteers planted a whopping 49.3 million tree saplings in a single day; blowing past the previous record for most trees ever planted in a twenty four hour period. The volunteers worked for 24 hours straight planting 80 different species of trees along roads, railways, and on public land. By harnessing human capital at scale, the Indian Government was able to make significant progress on its UN Sustainable Development Goals. The government is now working to expand its efforts and encourage others to engage in similar undertakings.
