Project Hermes: Taking the temperature of the ocean

A project to measure ocean temperatures worldwide

The Problem

It is hard to determine the general temperature of the ocean. It is important to understand the temperature changes of the oceans because even if people stopped adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, the Earth’s oceans will continue to get warmer for years to come as they slowly absorb the added heat of the Earth’s atmosphere, which could have damaging impact.

The Solution

Using satellites to track sea surface temperature, diver’s computers and a collaborative, non-profit, open source software and database, Project Hermes will provide near real-time temperatures of the ocean, at depth, worldwide. Project Hermes has the potential to help better understand the ocean at large and to better manage and conserve its resources.
