The Problem

As the world’s population grows and becomes more prosperous, we need to provide more energy to heat and light homes, fuel transport and power the economy. At the same time, we must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases that cause climate change.

The Solution

Statoil, the Norwegian oil and gas company, is taking its decades of offshore drilling experience and applying it to develop large-scale offshore wind farms in water depths where bottom-mounted towers are not feasible. Their technology is called Hywind. Hywind consists of a turbine placed on top of a ballasted steel cylinder that floats, fastened to the seabed by three mooring lines. A demonstration project near Karmøy in Norway has proven the technology and they seek to build the world’s biggest farm off of Scotland.
