Girl Be Heard: Amplifying the voices of young women for social change

Staging the revolution.

The Problem

There are a dearth of opportunities for women - especially women of color, survivors, and those involved in the justice system - to tell their story. Hollywood and society at large are saturated with male voices and perspectives. But young women have a story to tell; what they are lacking is a medium by which to tell it.

The Solution

Girl Be Heard is a U.S. based non-profit that blends theater and youth development in order develop, amplify, and celebrate the voices of young women through socially-conscious theatre making. Participants, ages 12-21, write and perform their own pieces about the issues that matter most to them, traveling from the steps of City Halls to the White House. In the process, they acquire tools that help them gain confidence, rise above circumstances and expectations, and become artist-activists in their communities and beyond. Girl Be Heard believes that when a girl finds her voice on stage, she will use that voice to knock down barriers and advance to a healthier and more productive life.
