Renerworld: Microgrid Community Project in Nigeria

Working to create a self-sufficient micro-grid that can provide clean renewable energy in Nigeria.

The Problem

Though Nigeria is a major oil producer, the country’s energy supply is not meeting the needs of its population, Africa’s largest. An especially acute problem is the lack of adequate transmission infrastructure to get the energy to the country's most remote citizens.

The Solution

Right now, Taqua Bay, Lagos is off the national grid, and its residents rely mainly on diesel-powered generators for their energy needs. Renerworld hopes to connect sixty households of electricity using photovotaic solar panels. This “microgrid” could serve as a model for the Nigerian government and encourage further investment in renewable energy. Microgrids transport energy more efficiently and typically involve mostly renewable energy sources, raising the promise of a net-zero energy grid in the future.
