Mangrove Action Project: Reversing the degradation of mangroves

An approach for reviving critical mangrove ecosystems

The Problem

Mangroves are vital for healthy coastal ecosystems in many regions of the world and research and studies are revealing the unique importance of these habitats to the planet.Coastal ecosystems play a vital role in helping to keep our planet healthy by linking land and sea. Mangroves once sheltered three-quarters of tropical and subtropical shorelines. Today, only half remain, their disappearance also adding to climate change.

The Solution

The Mangrove Action Project (MAP) is dedicated to reversing the degradation and loss of mangrove forests. Witnessing firsthand the rapid devastation of the world’s mangroves, the founders of MAP decided in 1992 that it was time to form a global network to address the loss of these coastal forests worldwide. By demonstrating the importance of mangrove forests through their programs, they are striving for a restored coastline managed sustainably by local communities. This approach involves networking, education, advocacy, conservation and restoration, as well as sustainable community-based development.
