20x20 Initiative: Restoring 20M hectares of land by 2020

An effort to reforest 20 million hectares of land in Latin America and the Caribbean by 2020

The Problem

Twenty percent of all forested and agricultural land in Latin America and the Caribbean has been degraded. This land, whether logged for timber, overgrazed by cattle or plowed-over for soy often becomes unproductive over time, lowering agricultural productivity and reducing ecosystem benefits like water filtration and enriched soil.

The Solution

Initiative 20x20 is a country-led effort to bring 20 million hectares of land in Latin America and the Caribbean into restoration by 2020. This initiative is part of a global movement to restore 150 million hectares of land around the world by 2020. If the 20x20 initiative is successful, it will lead to higher agricultural yields, revenue from the sale of forest products, ecotourism revenue, and, hopefully, help reduce climate change.
