LGBTQ Asylum Program: Providing Free Legal Services to LGBT Asylum Seekers

description
For more than 20 years, Immigration Equality has been running the LGBT Asylum program to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV positive immigrants.

The Problem

Among the immigrants seeking asylum in the United States, there is an especially vulnerable class: LGBT asylum seekers. Currently, there are 80 countries in the world that criminalize homosexuality. Ten of those 80 countries punish the LGBT community by applying the death penalty.

The Solution

Immigration Equality is the nation's leading LGBTQ immigrant right's organization. Through their LGBTQ asylum project, Immigration Equality provides free legal services and advice to thousands of LGBTQ and HIV positive immigrants. In addition to supporting the immigrants that are here in the US now, Immigration Equality also seeks to change the system by lobbying Congress to pass more progressive legislation to protect LGBTQ immigrants and recognize families seeking refuge in the US so that they can be legally married.
