Hands Across the Sand

Joining hands to send a clear message to political leaders — no to fossil fuels, yes to renewable energy.

The Problem

The use of fossil fuels and the methods deployed to extract and deliver them — including offshore drilling, hydraulic fracking, seismic air gun blasting, and tar sands pipelines like the Keystone XL — have devastating environmental effects, from oil spills and water poisoning to the rising sea levels, super storms, drought, forest fires, flooding and ocean acidification associated with climate change.

The Solution

Hands Across the Sand brings together individuals and organizations to promote a clean energy future across the world and end our dependence on dirty fuels. Founded in 2010, the organization grew into an international movement after the BP oil disaster in April of that year, when people came together to join hands, forming symbolic barriers against spilled oil and to stand against the impacts of other forms of extreme energy. That work continues, with activists to organizing hundreds of events and Joining Hands to send a message to local, national, and world leaders — to reject projects that expand the extraction and use of fossil fuels and instead accelerate the shift to clean, renewable energy.
