Citizens for Progressive Transit: Putting the Public Back in Public Transit

Citizens for Progressive Transit works to bring about comprehensive improvements to the public transportation system all throughout Greater Atlanta.

The Problem

Mass Transit is one of the most powerful tools we have at our disposal for limiting our carbon usage. All public transit systems (buses, trains, ferries, etc) use the laws of scale to their limit their greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, mass transit systems reduce the number of vehicles on the road, limiting traffic congestion and therefore the emissions of unnecessary greenhouse gases. Unfortunately, in the United States, public transit systems continue to deteriorate. Rather then being viewed as tools for greater efficiency and environmental responsibility, they are viewed negatively as a form of welfare and their funding is often undermined by public officials.

The Solution

Citizens for Progressive Transit is a grassroots organization operating out of Atlanta county that is committed to improving the city's public transportation systems. Citizens for Progressive Transit run outcome orientated campaigns (like the Clayton Transit Campaign and the Save MARTA Campaign), but they also organize public educational events and engage in public and media outreach.
