Shift: Turning Poo into Power in Pakistan

Empowering 3 billion people without access to safe energy. First: Pakistan Next: The World!

The Problem

At 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions, livestock emissions are more damaging to the plant than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together. As one of leading causes of greenhouse gases, animal emissions are largely overlooked in the narrative of climate change. Animal waste create a steady stream of refuse that omit harmful greenhouse gases. Organic wastes are especially potent in methane - a greenhouse gas that is 34 times more harmful to our environment than carbon dioxide. Without thoughtful consideration into how to tackle this problem, it could be one of the major drivers of our planet's destruction.

The Solution

Shift is an innovative nonprofit that turns animal refuse into clean, renewable energy. Shift builds energy domes in remote villages that convert cow's waste into cooking fuel. Shift, in essence, provides an alternative to fire wood. So not only do they convert methane producing gas into a safe alternative fuel, but they also prevent needless deforestation in Pakistan. Today, Shift has 12 operational energy domes - each dome servicing the cooking needs of 25 people. Each dome prevents 4 cubic meters of methane emissions per day which is the same as removing 24 cars off the road!
