Alternatives for Community and Environment

Building Power for Environmental Justice

The Problem

Environmental discrimination is a very real and ubiquitous problem that vulnerable populations must deal with on a daily basis. A disproportionate number of poor communities are surrounded by landfills, brownfield lands, and other toxic spaces. This is discrimination because it is introducing a harmful factor that can impact the health of local residents.

The Solution

The Alternatives for Community and Environment organizes and mobilizes both communities of color and low-income communities in Massachusetts in order to eradicate environmental discrimination and injustice. Currently, they are campaigning for cleaner public transportation and better legal protection for the populations in need. They are building broad-based coalitions that include youth-leadership programs.
