Save Bristol Bay

Ensuring one the world’s last great salmon fisheries isn’t destroyed by a massive, toxic open-pit mine.

The Problem

A proposed mining operation in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska, an area famous for the beauty and bounty of its fish and wildlife, threatens one of the world's last great wild salmon fisheries. Pebble Mine, which would extract gold, copper and molybdenum, would be one of the largest mines in the world, and because of its size, geochemistry and location, it runs a high risk of polluting Bristol Bay and the cultures, American jobs, fishing economy it sustains.

The Solution

Save Bristol Bay is collaborative effort among sportsmen, Alaska Native tribes, Alaska Native corporations and commercial fishermen, chefs and thousands of others, to protect Bristol Bay from the proposed mine. The organization is pushing for state-based protections and has supported local tribes in their petition to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to use its authority under the Clean Water Act to protect Bristol Bay's waters, securing over 2 million comments of support.
