The comics industry has been primarily a man's world, with few female characters and few female artists. The tides are changing slightly, but there is still much progress to be made. Five Thirty Eight recently reported that that females make up only 1 in 4 comic book characters.

Women Write About Comics is a group of over 100 female authors who plan to take over the comic book writing world. They not only hope to bring more female comic book writers into the world, but they also hope to use comic books as a medium for addressing issues of women's rights, sexual orientation, and racial justice. Gender imbalance is common in a lot of professional artistic industries, but the imbalance in comics is arguably the most egregious of them all.
