Sister Network Inc: Increasing attention to the impact of breast cancer on the African American community

description
Sister Network provides individual financial support, advocacy training, and research recruitment for African American women who have been affected by breast cancer.

The Problem

Black women face the highest breast cancer mortality rates. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for black women, and a 2015 report from the American Cancer Society finds that breast cancer rates among African American women are increasing. By every measurable indicator (age of diagnosis, age of death, state of diagnosis), black women are at a significant disadvantage.

The Solution

Sister Network Inc. is the only U.S> national African American breast cancer organization. Sister Network provides its members with financial assistance for medical related lodging, prosthesis, co-pays, and doctor's visits. They also lead educational programs to increase awareness of breast cancer among younger African American women. These educational programs help with screening and early detection. Above all, though, Sister Network is trying to change the stigma associated with breast cancer, and create a society where women feel comfortable speaking openly about it.
