Million Women Mentors: Advancing women in STEM careers
Million Women Mentors: Advancing women in STEM careers
The Problem
There is a major gender gap in the STEM profession. Women comprise only 26% of STEM workers. In more specific fields, the statistics get much worse. For instance, in engineering, although women make up 20% of Engineering graduates, only 11% of practicing engineers are women. This trend starts in high school, where female students are much less likely -- 15% vs 44% -- to consider pursuing a career in STEM.
The Solution
Million Women Mentors seeks to engage 2 million STEM mentors to increase the confidence of female high school students in pursuing STEM careers. MWM has three main goals. First, they'd like to increase the percentage of high school girls considering STEM careers. Secondly, they'd like to increase the number of undergraduate females pursuing STEM degrees. And thirdly, they're aiming to increase the number of women who stay and advance in STEM careers.
