FairVote

Working for electoral reforms that give voters greater choice, a stronger voice, and a truly representative democracy.

The Problem

Americans expect our voices to be heard, our views to be respected, and our votes to truly count. But the way we vote limits our choices for leaders and fails to hold them accountable to the communities they represent. Winner-take-all voting rules encourage partisan gerrymandering and create a situation where millions of voters are completely unrepresented by their political leadership. The resulting political polarization has led to less competitive state and national elections and more predictable outcomes, and the given hardcore partisan primary voters an outsize influence, and produced polarized legislatures that are either incapable of action or swing wildly from one set of policies to another, depending on which party is in charge.

The Solution

FairVote is a nonpartisan champion of electoral reforms that give voters greater choice, a stronger voice, and a representative democracy that works for all Americans. Since 1992, the organization has been advancing — and winning — electoral reforms at the local, state, and national level through strategic research, communications and collaboration. Today, FairVote is the driving force behind advancing “ranked choice voting” — a system that helps elect a candidate that better reflects the support of a majority of voters — and “fair representation” — in which voters elect representatives in proportion to their number, rather than on a winner-take-all basis. "We believe our government should be of, by, and for the people. We need a way to elect candidates who represent the will of the people.”
