Peace Over Violence

Dedicated to building healthy relationships free from sexual, domestic, and interpersonal violence.

The Problem

Violence against women is the most pervasive yet least recognized human rights abuse in the world. It is estimated that 35 percent of women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner or non-partner at some point in their lives, and in some countries the estimate is as high as to 70 percent. In the US, women experience about 4.8 million intimate partner-related physical assaults and rapes every year.

The Solution

Peace Over Violence is dedicated to building healthy relationships and families and communities free from sexual, domestic, and interpersonal violence. The community-based, volunteer-centered social service agency manages five departments delivering the services of Emergency, Intervention, Prevention, Education and Advocacy. Violence Over Peace seeks to listen, counsel, support, guide and works to heal survivors of violence; lobbies for legal reforms; and challenges the culture of violence that pervades our wider society. As the group’s website puts it, “Changing an individual point of view toward sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence will — one on one, one by one — cause social change, a transformation of society, a world without violence."
