The Problem
In the United States, there are more than 8 million adults who identify as LGBTQ, but the percentage of LGBTQ elected officials is much smaller. Openly gay Americans have only been serving in political office since 1974 when Kathy Kozachenko was first elected to city council in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In the decades since, positive developments have taken place. Now, there have been openly LGBTQ elected officials in all fifty states of America. And in 2012, Tammy Baldwin became the first LGBTQ lesbian senator of America. Still, more LGBTQ elected officials are needed to defend against all anti-LGBTQ efforts out there.
The Solution
The Victory Fund is an organization who seeks to achieve equality for the LGBTQ community by electing more LGBTQ leaders to public office. The organization provides campaign funding and strategic support to LGBTQ candidates. The Victory Fund has had a number of victories in recent years. In 2014, the Victory Fund helped elect Maura Healey to become the first openly LGBTQ attorney general in the US. And in 2016, 87 of the Victory Fund's endorsed candidates won their elections, including Kate Brown, the first openly LGBTQ Governor.
